Work Continues on Hwy 1 at Rocky Creek

Caltrans continues to work on a big slip out on Hwy 1 in Monterey County, calling a complete, overnight closure last weekend to install a key piece of the replacement roadway.

Caltrans was slated to fully close Hwy 1 at Rocky Creek for 24-hours on Dec. 13-14. Rocky Creek is located some 12 miles south of Carmel.

During the closure, contractors were going to install “nine pre-cast concrete girders as progress advances on construction of a viaduct to replace a section of the southbound lane lost due to a slip out on March 30.”

That slip out resulted in the 2-lane highway losing the southbound side and shoulder for a short segment.

From the equipment being brought in, the repair is going to be big. “Two heavy cranes will be in operation at either end of the project area during the girder installation,” Caltrans said in a news release. “No vehicle travel through the site will be possible.”

The closure was dependent on the weather but last weekend was nice so it can be assumed they got the job done. Meanwhile, the scenic highway continues to be troubled, with slides and slips from past winters that the State is still dealing with.

“Highway 1 remains closed at Regent’s Slide,” Caltrans said, “40-miles south of Carmel.”

With the new winter now upon us, it remains to be seen if new landslides and slip outs happen with this year’s rains. Since 2017, when the Mud Creek Slide buried the roadway under about 45-feet of dirt and rocks and wiped out about 1,500 feet of roadway, the highway has seldom been completely open or not under construction, sometimes in several areas at once.

It would be wise for anyone planning to drive up Hwy 1 to check road conditions first. See the Caltrans Dist. 5 social media accounts: on X at: @CaltransD5; on Facebook at: Caltrans Central Coast (District 5); and on Instagram at: Caltrans_D5.

Motorists are advised to slow down in construction zones to keep road workers safe. And remember, in California traffic fines are doubled in active construction zones.
