Timothy Edwin Frein, a beloved member of the Baywood Park and Morro Bay communities, passed away on March 20, 2025, in Morro Bay. Born in 1944, in California, Tim lived a life filled with entrepreneurial spirit, love for his family and friends, community service, and a deep love for sailing.

Throughout life, Tim pursued various business ventures, including owning and operating Woodland Hills Coin & Stamp and Coffee N Things. These establishments became well-known fixtures — first in Woodland Hills, then Topanga Mall and later in Baywood Park. Beyond business, Tim was an active and passionate member of the community, dedicating time to organizing local events and supporting causes close to his heart.

One of Tim’s first memories was his trips to Pismo Beach with his sons to camp on the beach and ride ATVs at the dunes. Later in life in Los Osos, Tim’s memories with his daughter Stephanie included fixing her 1953 GMC truck, learning to drive on Terri Road, his cooking a seven-course meal for her prom friends and dates, and working together.

One of Tim’s greatest joys was sailing. As an Admiral in the Baywood Navy, he took great pride in his boat, Nausicaa, which remained a familiar sight sailing and moored in Baywood Park. The Baywood Navy’s motto, “We don’t sail in water deeper than we can stand in,” reflected the lighthearted camaraderie that Tim fostered among fellow sailors and friends. Tim’s enthusiasm extended beyond the water as he organized numerous community events, including a boat-building contest and unique sailing competitions (remember the coconut races and the many sailing events) benefiting the Elfin Forest in Baywood Park.

Tim was also an esteemed member of the San Luis Obispo Historical Society. His passion for cooking shone through as he hosted dinners for the society and shared his culinary talents with the broader community. Whether preparing meals at his coffee shop or cooking for those in need at the San Luis Obispo homeless shelter, Tim’s generosity left a lasting impact on many.

Timothy is survived by his wife, Janis Burns; sister, Jane Frein Rowland; sons, Robert Frein, Scott Frein, and Steven Frein; daughter, Stephanie Knoop; and six grandchildren, and his first wife Mary. Tim was preceded in death by his father, Walter Frein, and mother, Helen Poole Frein.

A cherished presence in the lives of many, Tim will be deeply missed. His legacy of kindness, dedication to community service, and adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

Fair Winds and Calm Seas Tim.
