No. 42, Colton Janovec, carries the ball for the Pirates against Selma. Janovec received the team’s Platinum Pirate Award.
Morro Bay’s shot at a CIF Championship, despite a furious comeback try, ran out of time, as the Pirates fell 32-28 to Selma High School in the CIF Central Section Div. V Championship Game.
With a packed house, the Pirates came into the final game riding a big wave of momentum having bested powerhouse Bishop Union 28-20 the week before. Selma blanked Delano, 14-0 to earn its shot.
Morro Bay came in with one of the best passing attacks in the State, as junior quarterback Sands Dougherty led the entire State of California in passing yards, throwing for over 4,400 in the season.
But it was Selma’s elusive and relentless running attack that gave the Bears the advantage to overcome Morro Bay’s air assault.
The Pirates ended the season at 7-7 and advanced to the Central Section Divisional Championships. It should be noted that along with Dougherty’s high rankings and many accomplishments including throwing some 49 touchdown passes, senior wide receiver, John Myers, was among the top receivers in the State, amassing 1,313 receiving yards going into the championship game with Selma. That put him 53rd nationally, sixth in California and first in the CIF Central Section, according to Max Prep Sports. He also had 15 receiving touchdowns going into the Selma game.
