The Sheriff’s Department successfully located an elderly Arroyo Grande man and Alzheimer’s patient after he went missing for nearly 24 hours from his rural A.G. home.

According to a news release from Sheriff’s Spokesman Tony Cipolla, on Monday, Oct. 26 at about 1 p.m. Michael Iglis, 86, apparently walked away from his rural Arroyo Grande home in the 1700 block of Chesapeake Place.

The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit responded to the scene and began a search for Iglis, Cipolla said. Early in the incident Cipolla issued a news release asking the public to keep a lookout for Iglis, who was last seen wearing a green shirt, sweatpants and house slippers.

Searchers eventually located Iglis just after noon on Tuesday, Oct. 27. He’d apparently spent the night wandering the woods of rural A.G.

“He was found by search and rescue volunteers in the 800 block of Duntov Drive,” Cipolla said, “about a quarter mile away from his home on Chesapeake Place.”

The S&R Team was joined in the effort by “additional resources from outside the county,” Cipolla said, “along with drones and Search and Rescue K-9s.”

Iglis was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to Arroyo Grande Hospital for observation. His wife was notified of his discovery by sheriff’s deputies.

“The Sheriff’s Office,” Cipolla said, “is grateful Michael was found safe and would like to recognize the tremendous efforts of our search and rescue volunteers, assisting agencies, and everyone who helped bring this search to a successful conclusion.”
