Estero Bay residents will be able to show Morro Bay some love through brief, enjoyable service projects on Saturday, April 19. The event is called I Love MB and it will begin at 8:30 a.m. at City Park, located where Morro Bay Boulevard meets Harbor Street.
Twenty-seven civic gardening projects for people of all ages and abilities and one community art project will be completed in two hours, using a method perfected by Morro Bay in Bloom volunteers that has transformed placemaking in Morro Bay since 2013.
“Our two-hour participation model is accessible to busy people. It’s fun and it’s kind of magical,” said Walter Heath, founder of the group. “We gab, we garden, and the project gets done in two hours. It’s a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and fellowship that everyone can access any Wednesday or Saturday morning and be welcomed but the April 19 event will be special.”
Music, food trucks and fun activities are planned for event participants at City Park from 12-3pm, following their 9-11 a.m. community service. Pre-registration and project selection at morrobayinbloom.org is required to make sure that every volunteer will be suitably equipped. Art project participants will paint galvanized metal buckets at City Park with their own unique, freeform designs. The buckets will be used as planters for display beneath the flowering eucalyptus trees downtown.
Heath hopes the event will attract a diverse mix of people from the community. “People coming together with a shared purpose strengthens communities,” he said. “I Love MB is a celebration of the shared service that groups of people engage daily in our city. So, really, it’s a celebration of us.”
The costs of producing this free event are partially supported by the sale of I Love MB logo hoodies, tee shirts, stickers and magnets that are available exclusively at Morro Made, 490 Morro Bay Boulevard. Visit Morro Bay and City of Morro Bay are founding sponsors of the event.
