Motorists on Hwy 1 between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo will have to navigate through a construction zone, as Caltrans repairs the shoulder on a segment of the heavily traveled roadway.
Caltrans announced that on Oct. 16 it would begin a repair job on the southbound side of Hwy 1, south of the California Men’s Colony (on the SLO side).
The repairs include emergency work to reconstruct the shoulder, stabilize the embankment, upgrade guardrails, and replace failed concrete slabs.
Photos released by Caltrans show a large crack in the pavement along the shoulder of the road.
Also, the concrete overpass there has long had a segment of concrete slab cracking and sinking, with Caltrans making numerous patches to smooth out what can be a significant dip for cars traveling at highway speeds.
“A temporary barrier will be in place for approximately six weeks,” Caltrans said, “once this initial phase is complete, work will continue with intermittent daily lane closures. The shoulder repair work is expected to be completed by the end of December, weather permitting.”
Travelers should expect up to a 10-minute delay. There will be message signs erected to warn drivers of the upcoming construction zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph during the job and enforced by the Highway Patrol.
The contractor for the $2.9 million project is Cal Portland Construction of Santa Maria.
