During a practice in the harbor in Morro Bay, members of the Central Coast SurvivOars came to the rescue of a kayaker in distress in the water south of the boat launch.

Because it was a day without a lot of water sport activity in the harbor, the team, made up of county wide cancer survivors, noticed something a distance away and decided to paddle out. The kayak had capsized, and the man, who did not want to be identified, appeared to have been in the water for a while.

The team was able to toss him a rope and make their way to the nearest dock after contacting Harbor Patrol. It took about four of them to get the man out of the water where they wrapped him in an emergency blanket.

The kayaker was wearing safety equipment, but it may have had been worn incorrectly. The Harbor Patrol reportedly took the man and his kayak to his home in Morro Bay
