Folks traveling Hwy 46 by night should expect delays as Caltrans does emergency work on the heavily traveled east-west route.
Caltrans announced on Aug. 6 that on Aug. 9 they would begin overnight roadwork on Hwy 46, east of the junction with Hwy 41, the place they used to call “The Y” before the State built a proper interchange. Hwys 41 and 46 are the main routes from the Central Valley to the Central Coast and back again. Hwy 41 cuts off and runs towards Fresno and Hwy 46 heads southerly towards Bakersfield.
“Traffic controls,” reads a news release from Caltrans spokesman Ashton Harris, “will be in effect Sunday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Monday through Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for emergency maintenance work.”
There will be no traffic controls on Friday and Saturday nights.
Harris told Estero Bay News that their goal is to have the project finished by mid-September. They will be giving fair warning to motorists along the route.
“Electronic messaging boards,” Harris said, “will alert travelers in advance of the closure. Travelers can expect delays of 10 minutes and are asked to allow extra time on their travels through the area.”

Readers are reminded to slow down when passing through any road construction zone to insure safety of work crews, and because if you get caught driving too fast by the Highway Patrol the fines are doubled.
