Morro Bay residents can sign up now and get an inside look at the machinations of their police department.

MBPD announced signups for the “2024 Citizen’s Police Academy,” a 6-week series of seminars held once a week on Wednesday nights, starting Oct. 2, and ending Nov. 6. The seminars are from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and held at the police station on Morro Bay Boulevard.

The Citizen’s Academy is open to any Morro Bay resident and to anyone who works in the community (but lives elsewhere). The Academy, “will be a series of interactive sessions where citizens can learn firsthand how their police department operates, and how law enforcement performs within the community of Morro Bay,” reads the announcement.

Participants will receive an overview of law enforcement in Morro Bay, and demonstrations from a variety of instructors from our department.

Police Chief Amy Watkins said, “This is a great opportunity for our officers to collaborate and interact with our community. This year’s academy curriculum will provide a variety of presentations to highlight ‘how’ and ‘why’ we do what we do. I’m looking forward to spending time with our community and I’m proud of the curriculum our officers have prepared.”

Subjects being covered are: the history of MBPD; an introduction to the department divisions; and a segment giving an opportunity to ask questions for a greater understanding of the law enforcement profession.

Also, there will be instructional training to include radio communications, crime prevention, patrol procedures, and crime scene investigations among other topics.

The MBPD Citizen’s Academy is free to attend but space is limited. Anyone who signs up is subject to being fingerprinted and having a background check done on them. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, Sept. 25. Call 805-772-6225 or email: Bjohnson@morrobayca.gov.
