Plans to turn the former Sunnyside School in Los Osos into a public park will be decided by voters.

The Los Osos Community Services District approved a ballot initiative that would ask residents to fund the park and recreation area. For the measure to be considered, the Sunnyside Park Citizens Coalition needed to collect 1,029 signatures by the Dec. 21 deadline.

“On December 31, 2025, we were notified by the County Clerk that our submitted petition was found sufficient and signatures were verified,” said a news release by the Sunnyside Park Citizens Coalition. “Congratulations to all citizens of Los Osos who helped with this great achievement. Our verified signatures exceeded the County’s requirement!”

A LOCSD staff report reads, “The CSD has received a certificate from Elaina Cano, the County Clerk/Recorder, indicating that the group has submitted the valid signatures of greater than 10% of the registered voters in Los Osos. This qualifies the initiative measure to be placed on the ballot.”

A Special District Election will take place on June 2, 2026. The ballot initiative will read, “To provide open space and recreational facilities by creating a new community park with sports fields, shall the Los Osos Community Services District citizens’ initiative measure be adopted establishing a parcel tax of $185 parcel/year for 15 years, then dropping to $100 parcel/year (with CPI adjustments), to raise approximately $1,114,255 annually for 15 years for acquisition, and $602,200 annually after that for operations/maintenance, until ended by voters, with public disclosure, and local citizens’ oversight?”
