The 28th Morro Bay Bird Festival, held over Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, was a resounding success with approximately 1,200 participants. Attendees came from 25 U.S. states, Canada, and Spain, collectively spotting 214 bird species. The high diversity of birds in a compact geographic area remains a major draw for festivalgoers.
The event began with a grand opening to honor sponsors, City Council members, and San Luis Obispo District Two Supervisor Bruce Gibson. Guests toured the Vendor Bazaar and engaged with organizers.
Special events included a screening of “Condor Canyon” at the Bay Theatre, which highlights the Big Sur California Condor flock. Filmmaker Michael Buffo and Ventana Wildlife Society Director Kelly Sorenson were on hand for a Q&A session.
Saturday’s keynote speaker, David Lindo, “The Urban Birder,” shared his journey from humble beginnings in London to becoming a global birding ambassador. Lindo emphasized conservation, urging the audience to “Look Up” and notice wildlife in urban areas.
Sunday’s keynote by Kenn Kaufman, renowned author and birding expert, further inspired attendees.
Family Day on Saturday attracted over 150 children and their families, who enjoyed crafts, live critters, and ambassador animals from Pacific Wildlife Care. Two “Meet the Raptor” shows delighted full-capacity audiences with close-up encounters with birds of prey.
The festival once again showcased Morro Bay as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts.
