Three Cal Poly Bands present Bandfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Performing Arts Center SLO.
Highlights include “The Fast and the Furious” title, inspired by composer John Mackey’s hair raising “Redline Tango,” that the Wind Ensemble will play. It was the composer’s first work for concert band, written in 2004. It depicts the experience of redlining an engine or pushing it to the limit. The Wind Ensemble will also play “Slava” by Leonard Bernstein, and “Four Scottish Dances” by Malcolm Arnold.
The Wind Orchestra’s set will include “Honey Boys on Parade” by Edward Victor Cupero, which recalls the dazzling circus marches of the 1910s; “Wicklow” by Laura Estes; “Courtly Airs and Dances” by Ron Nelson; and “Holiday Piece” by David Foster, a rousing setting of the popular “Ukrainian Bell Carol” for modern concert band.
The 220-member Mustang Band will close the concert with arrangements of popular music including Snarky Puppy’s “Tio Macaco,” Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” ABBA’s “Mamma Mia,” and “Dancing Through Life” from the Broadway hit “Wicked,” as well as Cal Poly school songs that the group is performing for Cal Poly Athletics events.
The concert will be conducted by Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff and Associate Director of Bands Nicholas P. Waldron.

Corey Harris and Cedric Watson, masters of blues and Creole music will play at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 15. There is an Old-Time Jam from 6-7 p.m.
Check out an evening of blues and creole flavored music from living legends Corey Harris and Cedric Watson at the Milking Parlor at the Octagon Barn, 4400 Octagon Way in San Luis Obispo
Tickets are $30 ($20 Under 12) advance / $35 ($25 Under 12) door. They are available on Eventbrite.com. Event hosts can be reached at 805-235-2874.
Corey Harris’s musical prowess extends beyond traditional blues as he fearlessly integrates influences from reggae, soul, rock, and West African music into his compositions. His ability to honor the roots of the blues while infusing it with his own inventive style is exemplified in his acclaimed albums. Some of his compositions exhibit deliberate eclecticism, while others stay true to the raw essence of compelling vocals and guitar that define the traditional blues.
Throughout his illustrious career, Corey Harris has shared stages, recorded, and toured with an esteemed array of musicians, including BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Henry Butler, R.L. Burnside, John Jackson, Ali Farka Toure, Dave Matthews Band, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco, and Natalie Merchant. Notably, Harris’s talent caught the attention of renowned filmmaker Martin Scorcese, who featured him as an artist and narrator in the critically acclaimed documentary “Feel Like Going Home” (2003), tracing the blues from its origins in West Africa to the southern United States.
Harris will be joined on stage by 4x Grammy nominee and Creole musician Cedric Watson, who played the 7 Sisters Stage with Joudan Thibodeaux and Joel Savoy earlier this year. Watson has played with some of the great names in Creole music, such as Dexter Ardoin and the Creole Ramblers and Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys.
