The San Luis Obispo Symphony opens its 2026-2027 season with Rites of Passage, a program that celebrates innovation and legacy by bridging musical past and present. The concert pairs the world premiere of a newly commissioned symphony with Stravinsky’s groundbreaking ballet score “The Rite of Spring,” opening with the vibrant Danse Nègre by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. The season-opening matinee takes place Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo. The concert has been scheduled as a special Sunday afternoon performance, and audiences are invited to walk the red carpet as the Symphony opens its season.

The concert’s centerpiece is the world premiere of Stefan Podell’s “A Sense of Place,” commissioned by Garrett Foulke and Dorothy Correa and facilitated by the American Composers Forum. A tone poem inspired by the views of Zabriskie Point and Lahaina, the piece gives audiences a rare opportunity to witness a brand-new orchestral work at the moment of its creation.

The Symphony is offering community-focused pricing for Rites of Passage, with child and student tickets priced at just $12, and adult tickets starting at only $20. These tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Regular tickets are $64 -$84. For tickets and more information, visit slosymphony.org.

Cal Poly’s Center for Coastal Marine Sciences holds its open house at the Cal Poly Pier. Photo by Dylan Head/Multimedia Producer/Cal Poly 10-28-23

The community is invited to experience the Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the university’s pier acquisition.

Visitors will enjoy 360-degree views of San Luis Bay and interact with touch tanks full of live marine creatures.

Guests will have the opportunity to view tiny marine species through microscopes and learn about whale migrations. Cal Poly professors and students will be on hand to answer questions.

Attendees may take the tour at their own pace and are encouraged to bring cameras to take photos of seals, pelicans, sea creatures and the incredible coastal views. No pets are allowed and close-toe shoes are required. All visitors will be required to sign a safety waiver prior to entering the pier.

The residents of Los Osos and folks all over SLO County are invited to participate in and plan for the 2nd Annual Los Osos Community Wide Yard Sale, happening October 3 and 4.  Initiated last year by Jessica Gilder, third generation Los Osos resident and owner of Metamorphosis Death Care, the event was quite successful, with about 25 participating sellers, and shoppers visiting from as far south as Santa Maria.  Everyone showed gratitude and were excited for it to continue! It was decided to keep the fall date on the first weekend of October, to promote second-hand holiday shopping, as well as to avoid competition with the neighboring city-wide sales in Atascadero, Morro Bay, and Grover Beach, who hold theirs in the springtime.

All info can be found on Facebook on the “Annual Los Osos Community Wide Sale!” page under events, or by visiting facebook.com/events/1387859683201328, where you can message Jessica to sign up as a seller.  You may also reach her by text at (805)904-5414.

October is National Dessert Month, and this year San Luis Obispo is celebrating in style. What began as a simple idea — gather friends around cake — has grown, in celebrations like it around the world, into a joyful ritual of creativity, community, and abundance. Inspired by the viral cake picnic trend, the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden (SLOBG) is bringing Cake-a-Palooza, a botanically themed cake celebration to the Garden on October 3, — arriving just eleven days ahead of National Dessert Day (October 14) and kicking the county’s dessert month off with hundreds of cakes and cake lovers!

Cake-a-Palooza invites bakers of all kinds to enter their very best work — the boldest decor, the most delicious flavors, a beloved family recipe, or a showcase cake from a favorite local bakery. Whether it’s a garden-inspired masterpiece or a treasured heirloom recipe, every cake is welcome. Pro bakers can compete for visitor votes and take Best in Cake Show bragging rights back home!

The day unfolds in two delicious acts:

The Display: Hundreds of participant cakes are arranged in long, winding rows — a visual runway of frosting and fondant, ready for admiring, photographing, and marveling over.

The Tasting: Once the viewing is done, attendees divide into groups and rotate through the tables, armed with boxes to cut and collect slices of the cakes that catch their eye.

Tickets are on sale now. Entry is $25 plus a cake (minimum 8” diameter x 3” high) — both a ticket and a cake are required to participate. No exceptions.  Proceeds support SLOBG’s mission of education and conservation. Located on 150 acres within El Chorro Regional Park, the Garden receives no Parks funding entirely on community giving, grants, sponsorships, and events like Cake-a-Palooza to sustain its gardens and programs.
