Extensive efforts to make San Luis Obispo County’s residents healthier and safer appear to be doing well, according to an annual report put out by the County Health Department.
The recently released, “2026 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Annual Report,” a County news release said, “showcases the collective impact of the SLO Health Counts collaborative, bringing together the County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department, community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, local governments, and residents to improve health and well-being throughout San Luis Obispo County.”
According to the SLO Health Counts website (see: www.slohealthcounts.org/who-we-are), “SLO Health Counts builds on a long-standing tradition of community collaboration to advance health and wellness in San Luis Obispo County, including the pioneering efforts of Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL SLO) and ACTION for Healthy Communities, which first launched this work in the 1990s. We extend our sincere gratitude to the many community members, partners, and leaders whose dedication has helped make this work possible.”
Interim County Health Officer Dr. Rick Rosen said. “Improving health takes more than healthcare — it takes communities working together to address the conditions that help people thrive.
“This year’s report reflects the power of collaboration to create healthier neighborhoods, improve access to care and prevent mental health and substance use issues from taking root. We’re proud of the progress our partners have made and grateful for their continued commitment to our community.”
The CHIP plan is a long-term strategy that looks at things that affect people’s health like housing, transportation, education, access to health care and “social connections.”
Highlights from the County’s three priorities in the latest CHIP report include:
• Healthy Neighborhoods, partners focused their efforts in San Miguel, Oceano, Nipomo and Los Osos, using “community data to inform place-based planning efforts around parks, complete streets, and other essential infrastructure for health.”
• Access to Care, partners continued to engage local healthcare providers, educational institutions, and residency programs to expand existing and build new pathways for career development.
Partners supported paid internships for future healthcare professionals, enhanced workforce data resources and expanded cultural and linguistic support for providers serving diverse communities, including Mixteco-speaking residents.
According to the Health Department website: “San Luis Obispo County is home to an estimated 3,400–8,000 Mexican Indigenous community members, primarily from Mixtec communities in Guerrero, Mexico.
“These communities are often misunderstood in health and service systems due to assumptions about language, communication needs, and how health and healing are understood.
“A common misconception is that Spanish interpretation is sufficient. However, many Mixtec families primarily speak Indigenous languages and may have limited or no Spanish proficiency.”
• Mental Health and Substance Use, partners released updated suicide and drug-related death data to strengthen prevention efforts, collaborated with CenCal Health on a youth-focused Suicide Prevention Month campaign and trained all San Luis Obispo County paramedics to administer buprenorphine in the field.
Efforts helped contribute to a decline in drug-related deaths — from 105 in 2022 to 67 in 2024 — surpassing a major Community Health Improvement Plan goal.
