The inaugural Responder Roundup takes place on May 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the dunes in Morro Bay. This is the first-ever interagency training event bringing together first responders and lifeguards from across the country for comprehensive drowning and airway management simulations designed to enhance emergency response capabilities.

The “Pit” parking lot and surrounding dune areas will be closed to the public during this time. Guided by Dr. Justin Sempsrott, one of the world’s leading drowning experts, the training will deliver one of the most realistic, credible, and up-to-date drowning response experiences available. Participants will engage in scenario-based, high-fidelity simulations that reflect real world rescue conditions and incorporate modern response techniques.

This training will introduce updated drowning protocols while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among lifeguards, fire departments, ambulance providers, water rescue teams, helicopter rescue teams, critical care flight teams, and hospital personnel. By sharing practical field experience and applying proven methods, participants will help advance the future of drowning response and strengthen operational effectiveness.
