The search for a missing Atascadero man has ended tragically, after the Coroner’s Office positively identified human remains found in a rural area of Atascadero.

According to Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla, 35-year-old Darren Kyle Santangelo of Atascadero was reported missing by family members on July 6.

He was reportedly last seen on June 30 at about 9 p.m. leaving his house in the 7500 block of Rocky Canyon Road in Atascadero.

On July 9, Cipolla said, the Atascadero Police Department responded to a call of human remains located near the Chalk Mountain Golf Course.

On Aug. 10, Cipolla said, Coroner’s Office detectives “positively identified the remains as Santangelo. At this time, there is no indication the death was suspicious or the result of foul play.”

Cipolla said the case is still under investigation.
