I am outraged by the Trump administration’s decision to halt Equinor’s wind turbine construction off the coast of New York. This fully federally permitted project is designed to power 400,000 homes with clean wind energy.
The current administration is hell-bent on replacing clean, renewable energy with polluting, planet-warming fossil fuels, such as coal plants which are the most polluting and expensive source of energy, claiming they have a mandate from Americans to do so.
But they have no such mandate. According to surveys done by the nonpartisan Yale Center for Climate Change Communication, 63% of registered voters think developing sources of clean energy should be a high priority for the President and Congress.
The U.S. military agrees. According to a 2023 statement by the U.S. Army, climate change poses an immediate and serious threat to U.S. national security. But those statements have now been stricken from the Army’s websites. For the first time in a decade, U.S. intelligence agencies’ annual threat assessment completely omitted any mention of climate change.
Whether it be in the form of letters to the editor or peaceful protests in the streets, Americans must stand up to Trump’s usurpation of power. He does not have our best interests in mind.
