City Should Buy Morro Elementary Property

W

e send this letter to inform and engage our fellow Morro Bay community members. As SLCUSD pursues selling the Morro Elementary property, it is critical that the site be acquired by the City of Morro Bay. The site is integral to the tone, identity, and fabric of the Morro Bay community. For generations, it has served and impacted local families, directly and indirectly, and is among the pillars of character and small-town charm in Morro Bay.

The opportunity to return these buildings and this site to the City is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for Morro Bay. Locals around Estero Bay make essential use of the green space, which is the only soccer field supporting Morro Bay children, families, and community members. Widely regarded for their distinct, attractive architectural design, the buildings are special, historic landmarks that reflect Morro Bay’s allure and identity. Community support of the City’s acquisition of this site will have lifelong impacts to the city and the community

Working together, as a community, we can succeed in retaining this site, allowing the City and citizens to hold the voice and authority in determining the fate of the Morro Elementary site. Assuredly, there will be procedural, financial, and resource hurdles along the path. However, the weight of this fork in the road cannot and should not be dismissed. If we do not act together now, we risk sacrificing a precious piece of our history, our culture, our community, and our future.

Join Friends of Morro Elementary on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the MB Community Center to engage in the actions needed to accomplish this goal.
