With the Fall 2024 prep sports season well past the halfway mark, the Morro Bay High Boosters have honored the Student Athletes of the Month for October.

The Boosters honored Cross Country runners, Phaedra Fernflores and Joaquin Cuellar; Girls’ Golf Team members, Lucy Fortini and Willa Turton; Boy’s Water Polo player, Ryker Robson; Boy’s Beach Volleyball player Johnny Roberts, and Girl’s Volleyball player Indie Nelson as October’s Student/Athletes of the month.

Cross Country

Cross Country Coach Jennifer Frere named Phaedra Fernflores and Joaquin Cuellar for October honors.

“Phaedra,” Coach Frere said, “is new to Cross Country after running the 800 meters in track last year. Phaedra is not afraid of a challenge and has been running stronger and faster each week. She is always at practice and brings a positive attitude to our workouts.”

The rookie runner is steadily improving. “Phaedra has been consistently running in our Top-4 spots on Girls Varsity this season,” Coach Frere said, “and is positioned to make a difference for the team at CIF.”

Cuellar’s a veteran. “This is Joaquin’s third season of Cross Country,” Coach Frere said. “Joaquin trained all summer with the team and as a result has seen great progress this season. He is a leader for our younger runners, always wants to know what else he can do to run faster and welcomes the hard workouts. Joaquin often wants to run one more repetition to get all he can out of practice. His consistency and mindset are great examples for others to follow.”

Boy’s Water Polo

Water Polo player, Ryker Robson was MBHS Athlete of the Month for October.

Coach Ryan Davis said of his nominee, Ryker Robson: “Ryker has had a great start to his third year as a member of the Varsity Men’s Water Polo Team. He leads the team in goals and draws ejections.”

Girl’s Golf

Girls’ Golf Team players, Lucy Fortini (left) and Willa Turton were honored as MBHS Athletes of the Month for October.

Coach Mimi Black honored two of her Lady Pirate golfers — Lucy Fortini and Willa Turton. “Lucy is a senior and the team captain of the Girls’ Golf Team,” Coach Davis said. “She is currently ranked as the top-3 player in the Ocean League, shooting consistently-low scores at league matches. Lucy brings a lot of positive energy to our team, and, besides golf, Lucy is also the Senior Class President at Morro Bay High School, showing leadership both on and off of the golf course.”

Willa Turton, a junior on the girls’ varsity team has been lighting it up. “At the Ocean League opening match at Dairy Creek Golf Course,” Coach Davis said, “Willa shot a personal best of a 49 and won the low scoring medalist honors of the match. There are 30 girls competing at league matches, so that was a huge honor and accomplishment.

The coach likes what she does on the golf course and at school. “Willa always gives her best at practices and matches,” he said, “and I admire that she also contributes to Morro Bay High School being involved in student leadership.”

Boy’s Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball player, Johnny Roberts, was MBHS Athlete of the Month for October.

Volleyball Coach Shelby Frey nominated Johnny Roberts for honors off the Boys’ Beach Volleyball squad.

“Johnny started the season as a JV player,” Coach Frey said, “and by the end of the season I would have felt comfortable partnering him with any of the top varsity players. His willingness to chase every ball and fight for every point is what helped him work his way up the ranks.”

Roberts’ highlights reel includes a great performance with partner Noah Cuarenta at a key match. “The highlight of the season,” Coach Frey said, “is when he and Noah Cuarenta won the Varsity Silver Division. I’m extremely excited to see his improvement and can’t wait to see him play indoors next!” Coach Frey also coaches the Boys’ Varsity Volleyball [indoor] Team, which competes in Spring and the Girls’ Volleyball Team, as well and competing now.

Girls’ Volleyball

Indie Nelson was named MBHS Athlete of the Month for October off the Girl’s Volleyball Team.

Coach Frey singled out Indie Nelson for October’s Honors.

“Indie has been a big asset in our program lately,” the coach said. “She is constantly asking for advice on how to improve and is immediately taking that advice and putting it to work!”

Nelson recently had a big night for the Lady Pirates. “She had four big blocks in the Orcutt game this past Thursday,” Coach Frey said, “bringing tons of excitement and energy to our team. Pushing us to a win and making Girls Volleyball 5-0 in league!’
