Weaving as Story and Song

Phoebe Vlassis invites you to witness the act of weaving as song and story, and to participate in its co-creation on April 26 and 4 p.m. at Estero Art and Craft at 523 Harbor Street in Morro Bay.

From Greek love songs and industrial protest chants to pulsing electronic beats, the audience will journey through the ancient tale of textiles with humor and heart. With the final revelation of the completed cloth, woven live throughout the performance, you will behold your own role in the weaving.

Tickets are $15 at esterbayartandcraft.com and seating is limited.

Phoebe Vlassis is a weaver and musician from Athens, Greece, currently based in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Addis Recognizes Local Businesswomen

April is Financial Literacy Month and Assemblymember Dawn Addis (Dist. 30) recognized the organization Economics of Being a Woman on their 50th anniversary.

“On behalf of the California State Legislature, I proudly recognize the Economics of Being a Woman program on its 50” anniversary,” Addis said in a press release. “Thanks to the vision of founder Libbie Agran and the continued leadership of Andrea Wasko and Meaghan Gilbert, the program has empowered more than 35,000 individuals through financial education since 1976. I commend its lasting impact and wish it continued success.”

In 1976, Libbie Agran started the Economics Of Being A Woman financial education programs to stress the importance of financial preparedness and security in women’s lives. Los Osos residents Andrea Wasko and Meaghan Gilbert joined Agran that same year to help women build wealth to meet the challenges of each life stage, empower women at home and in the workplace and increase financial independence and manage risk.

Lumin Earth Apothecary’s New Kava and Botanical Elixir Bar

Lumin Earth Apothecary, the mother-daughter-owned herbal apothecary, tea bar, and crystal shop, has expanded its space with a new kava and botanical elixir bar experience bringing a fresh, calming, and community-centered nighttime offering to the Central Coast.

Known for its handcrafted herbal teas, medicinal elixirs, and intentional wellness offerings, Lumin Earth Apothecary has grown organically over the years into a local hub for plant-based healing, ritual, and connection. The new addition builds on that foundation introducing a dedicated evening space centered around kava, herbal infusions, and functional botanical drinks designed for relaxation, grounding, and social connection without alcohol.

“This has been a natural evolution for us,” said co-owner Sierra Mace. “We’ve always been about creating intentional experiences with plants. This next step allows us to expand into evening hours and offer a space where people can unwind, connect, and feel held by the plants in a different way.”

The kava bar extension features traditional kava preparations alongside curated botanical elixirs, herbal tonics, and seasonal blends made with the same ingredient-focused philosophy Lumin Earth is known for. The space will maintain its signature aesthetic, earthy, calming, and rooted in nature-based wellness.

In addition to expanding its menu, the new offering will extend evening hours and provide a sober-friendly social alternative for the community. The kava bar extension opening date is May 1, from 5-7 p.m., with updates shared through Lumin Earth Apothecary’s social media and newsletter.

Wood’s Offers Free Microchip Clinics

Woods Humane Society will hold four, free microchip clinics to help members of the public protect their pets if they ever become lost. The free clinics are by-appointment only and will be held at Woods North County on Fridays, May 8 and 22 from 2-4 p.m. and at Woods SLO on Wednesdays, May 6 and 20 from 2-4 p.m.

“Microchips are truly lifesavers,” said Woods CEO Emily L’Heureux in a news release. “As we approach a time of year when fireworks scare animals and make lost pet numbers increase dramatically, these devices provide some insurance that lost animals can be reunited with their loving families rather than entering the overtaxed animal shelter systems across the country. Tiny, harmless, and inexpensive, microchips make a huge impact and help us reserve kennels for animals who are truly without a home.”

The American Humane Association estimates that 10 million pets are lost in the United States each year, and only 15 percent of lost dogs and 2 percent of lost cats in shelters without ID tags or microchips are reunited with their owners. Pets with microchips are 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners.

Regularly priced at $20 at Woods Humane Society, microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are implanted just under the skin. Each chip contains a unique code that can be scanned easily by a veterinarian or an animal shelter employee to look up the pet owner’s contact information in an online national database like 24PetWatch.

Find more information or make an appointment at woodshumanesociety.org/microchip.
