Wiggle Room Possible on Property Tax Deadlines

While property taxes provide funding for vital services delivered to the public during this time by the county, cities, schools, and special districts, the SLO County Tax Collector is committed to working with taxpayers to ease the impacts of their tax obligations to the greatest extent permitted by law during the coronavirus crisis.

Under California law, the second installment of the 2019-20 property tax bill becomes delinquent if not paid on or before April 10, 2020. While State law does not currently allow changes to the deadline, or waiver when a taxpayer has the ability to pay, the Tax Collector intends to fully apply his authority to waive penalties and interest pursuant to California Revenue and Taxation Code section 4985.2 for any late payment due to reasonable cause or circumstances related to COVID-19.

Claims for waiver of penalty and interest must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Assistance with the claims process is available to taxpayers Monday through Friday, 8-5pm at (805) 781-5831 or by online request at ttc@co.clo.ca.us.

The Tax Collector’s office is currently closed for counter services but encourages taxpayers to make property tax payments by internet at www.slocountytax.org, US Mail at 1055 Monterey Street Room D-290, San Luis Obispo, CA 93408, or by phone at (805-781-5831.
