Students at Baywood Elementary School have improvements to the garden area where they can learn about planting, harvesting and possibly eating their work.

Tree stumps make a good outdoor setting for students.

In the fall of 2021, the Los Osos Valley Garden Club (LOVGC), member of California Garden Clubs, Inc., partnered with Baywood Elementary School PTA member Erin Sanderson and Baywood teacher Jessie Gade. The goal was to enhance the Baywood Elementary School Garden environment.

The completed new sink and potting table.

A list of improvements was created that included student seating (benches and tree stumps), potting areas (potting table and sink), and watering cans among other things. The joint effort was made possible by a National Garden Club Plant America Grant of close to $1,000, and additional in-kind donations from LOVGC, Central Coast Landscape Products and Coastal Tree Experts, and the hard work of Baywood School volunteers and garden club members.

As an added bonus, the Baywood School was able to obtain another grant to fund a bilingual garden teacher from “One Cool Earth,” a non-profit organization that unites communities and schools to create thriving school garden programs that grow successful students. Thanks to the Baywood School and LOVGC partnership, students will have an even more rewarding and enjoyable gardening experience.
