Want to create your own journal, scrapbook, or photo album? Learn the art of bookbinding in this hands-on class, where participants will make a traditional Japanese stab-bound book. Perfect for beginners and those looking to build skills, this class introduces foundational techniques while guiding you in creating a functional book to take home.
The art of Japanese stab binding, developed during the Edo period in Japan (Qing Dynasty in China), around 1603-1867, uses flat sheets that are stitched together in decorative patterns. This traditional technique offers a gratifying and visually compelling introduction to the art and craft of book construction.
Attendees will learn one classic style and explore variations. Covers can be simple or highly decorative — once learned, the technique offers endless possibilities for customization. Handmade books make beautiful gifts.
The class also covers how to choose and evaluate papers for text blocks and covers, accurately cut thick boards, and use essential bookbinding tools. If time allows, additional binding techniques will be introduced.
The class takes place Saturday, April 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Estero Bay Arts and Crafts, 523 Harbor St., Morro Bay. The fee is $80 with all supplies included. Instruction is by Shari Sullivan, who studied bookbinding with Shereen LaPlantz, a leading figure in the modern revival of book arts.
