Celebrating 100th Birthday with Retired Superintendent

Retired San Luis Coastal Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Bill Newman’s 100th birthday was celebrated by the California Retired Teachers Association, Division 23, on April 10 at the Madonna Inn.

Born in 1925, Dr. Newman earned the nickname “Mr. Morro Bay” for his work to save the Morro Bay Estuary from development and his tireless efforts to preserving the Morro Bay coastal area. 

Dr. Newman is also one the founders of the CalRTA Scholarship Program and will have one of the scholarships named in his honor. It will be awarded to a high school senior who has chosen education as their career.

The luncheon and general meeting included a presentation about Dr. Newman’s career, a birthday cake, and a performance by world-renowned violinist, Brynn Albanese.
