A Morro Bay resident with ties to people devastated by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6 is part of a fundraiser to help those in need.

MB Rotary Club President John Solu is a native of Turkey. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 12.

“Many people have asked, ‘What can I do,’ said Sulu. He established a mechanism to fund the Rotary Club of Ankara, Turkey, which is currently leading the aid efforts on the ground.  The Ankara Club District 2430 will receive donations through Rotary International and use the funds exclusively to aid the survivors in the ravaged areas.

The Rotary Club of Morro Bay is partnering with Grape Leaf restaurant and Coalesce Book Store & Garden Chapel for a benefit to support the survivors of the devastating earthquakes.

The event is March 7 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Coalesce, 845 Main Street in Morro Bay

Ibrahim “Abe” Abuhilal, owner of Grape Leaf restaurant, and Linna Thomas, owner of Coalesce Book Store & Garden Chapel, respectively donated the Mediterranean food and gathering space in the garden and chapel. There is no set charge to attend, and relief donations offered will be graciously accepted at the door.

For readers who can’t make the event but are inspired to donate to the relief efforts, go to www.morrobayrotary.org.

Join us to say, “We are Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County, CA and we care,” said Sulu.
