The Pastel Society of the West Coast’s new Out of Bounds! Exhibition goes beyond the traditional use of pastel medium and breaks out of the bounds of time-honored pastel expressions as all juried artworks are a combination of pastel and one or more other media in a two-dimensional format. The competition breaks the 80% rule for traditional pastel exhibits requiring the entries to be at a maximum of 50% (30% minimum) pastel to be combined with one or more other mediums creating two-dimensional works of art.
There is an awards ceremony and reception with renowned British pastelist, Tony Allain, Saturday, April 19 from 2-4 p.m.

The City of San Luis Obispo is accepting design submissions for the 2025 Box Art Request for Proposals. This year, box designs will need to meet specific guidelines based on their Historic District locations, ensuring that the art reflects and respects the charm of these unique areas. Whether you represent a community group, are a member of an artistic team, or are a solo artist, this is your opportunity to leave your mark on the City of San Luis Obispo. The deadline to submit your application is May 16, by 5:00 p.m. PDT.
To minimize barriers for artists, the City will wave the business license fee and offer an in-person Box Art Support Workshop on April 30, at the Library Community Room from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. where artists can get help with: taking high-resolution pictures of their art, adding their artwork to the Box Art digital template and getting application and general support.
Selected artists will receive an $800 stipend for their box art renderings. Like last year, selected designs will be vinyl wrapped on to the utility boxes. No matter what medium is being used, if the artwork can be scanned or photographed and digitized, it can be made into a vinyl wrap. We want to see your creative vision brought to life. For more details on how to apply, go to www.slocity.org/PublicArt.
