Tracy Bullock, the owner of Babylonian Soap Company, welcomes customers to the company’s new location at 1216 2nd Street

Simply walking into Babylonian Soap Company is refreshing. The product displays throughout the store and the lighting have a calming effect while the scents—herbal, musk, floral, fruity—invite positive energy that soothes the mind.

Babylonian makes and sells natural, plant-based skincare products for both women and men that are paraben and sulfate free using organic and locally sourced ingredients when whenever possible.

Owner Tracy Bullock said she began the skincare line for herself in 2011 because she had extreme skin allergies, autoimmune disorders and an intolerance for store-bought beauty products.

“Your skin is your biggest organ,” said Tracy. “What you put on it is filtered through the liver and other organs, so its best to use the most natural you can get.”

Many readers are likely familiar with Babylonian Soap Company as they ran a boutique in Morro Bay for about 10 years while keeping the manufacturing end of operations at the location in Baywood Park at 1216 2nd Street, where the new storefront recently opened.

“We love Morro Bay and love being in business doing what we love, but Covid – 19 lead us down this path to Los Osos,” said Tracy. “We have been manufacturing on 2nd street for about 5 years now, and we have lived in Osos for 15 years. We thought we might be a good addition to our little community. We live in Baywood and just love being a part of the community.  The back-bay is a hidden little gem, and I can walk to work now! Gotta [sic] love that I reduced my carbon footprint a little.”

Everything with the BSC label is made on the premises. Those amazing scents mentioned earlier are incorporated inside soaps, lotions, scrubs, oils, and bath bombs.

“The lemongrass and man bar are our very top selling scents and have been for 10 years,” said Tracy. “All of our scents can be made into any of our products. We do custom scents as well in a variety of products, soaps, lotions, oils, room sprays, hand sanitizers and shampoo, you name it.”

Other top sellers are the bath bombs, soap and, recently, hand sanitizer in a variety of scents but mostly lemongrass.

In addition to their line of skincare products, the store also carries other mostly all natural, paraben and sulfate free products including:

Margo Elena Lollia, Tokyo Milk, Cottage Greenhouse, Voluspa, Kobo, Paddwax, Naked Princess, Baccea, Vani Tisanes, Papaya and Riddle.

“We wanted to give the customer the options of different products other than our own,” Tracy said.

Why the name Babylonian?
“I needed a catchy name Tracy’s Soap shop sounded boring,” Tracy said. “I have always loved history and in college learned about the ancient Babylonians, they created the Saponification process with fats—the soap making process in 2800 BC.”

The store is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Mondays from 11 a.m, – 4 p.m. They are following social distancing practices—masks are required, contactless payment is an option and hand sanitizer is available in the store.

“We also only allow 3 people in the store at a time and do offer a VIP Shopping 1/2 -hour window by apt only, so the customer can have the store to themselves,” Tracy said. “Customers just text me for an appointment, and I open up the shop. Many times I am in the back making goodies so I just open up the door. Dogs are always welcome too. We also do curbside pick up. You can order online and choose curbside at checkout for no fee.”
