The Morro Bay Police Department has received reports from local businesses and banks that they have recently received counterfeit currency from shoppers. This usually occurs with large bills such as $50 and $100.
“When receiving those large bills, verify they are valid by checking for the proper verification markings,” MBPD said in a news release. “If you choose to receive large bills, please take extra steps to verify the bills are genuine. We recommend at least a two-step verification process. Counterfeiters don’t just target retail stores, private sellers trying to sell personal items can also fall victim.”
How to Verify a Bill
• Check for watermarks. Hold up the bill in the light and look for the watermark of a face.
• Examine serial numbers, are they evenly spaced and aligned.
• Look for raised printing. Authentic bills have raised printing on specific areas, like the denomination and treasury seal.
• Check for fine lines and microprinting. Genuine bills have intricate, defined lines in the border.
If you have questions or believe you have received a counterfeit bill, contact your local police department and have an officer respond to assist.
