Los Osos Town Hall Meeting Oct. 5

The County of San Luis Obispo’s Planning & Building Department will hold a town hall meeting to discuss community development in Los Osos on Oct. 5 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Los Osos Middle School at 1555 El Morro Ave.

“Los Osos is on the cusp of having an updated blueprint for community development with proposed amendments to the Estero Area Plan and the Los Osos Community Plan,” reads a notice form the County.

Discussion Topics include:

• Proposed amendments to the Estero Area Plan and the Los Osos Community Plan

• Growth management strategies and the Los Osos Habitat Conservation Plan

• The “Los Osos Waitlist to Build”

• Information on the upcoming County Board of Supervisors hearing on October 29.

For decades hardly any new homes have been built in Los Osos due to the sewer issue and most recently a belief that the groundwater basin was in overdraft, so-called Level 3 Severity.

But last June, the Coastal Commission certified the County’s Los Osos Community Plan, which changed that severity designation, and potentially cleared the last hurdle for owners of vacant property to move forward with building a home.

Clean-Up Week

Mission County Disposal will offer Clean-Up in Los Osos the week of September 30 – October 4.

Clean-Up Week is a community service provided free to single family residential garbage customers. Place your Clean-Up Week garbage on the curb no later than 6 a.m. on your regular garbage collection day. Don’t block your containers because they still run automated trucks. You may set out up to six bags, 32-gallon capacity size, each not to exceed 75 pounds and 4 feet in length.

Should you have metal, electrical or bulky items, call the office at 805-543-0875 to schedule pick up. Special pricing for these items is $25.34 each + tax, limit of two like items and is valid only during Clean-Up Week. You must call no later than Friday, September 27th to schedule the pickup of these items. These items will not be picked up unless you call.

Official County-Wide Vote Sticker Winners

The votes are in and the SLO County Elections Office has two new official “I Voted” sticker designs. The winning designs, by Old Mission School third grader Melanie Rathbun and San Luis Obispo High School senior Joanna Rawlings, were selected from among 20 entries and votes were cast by mayors of the seven SLO County cities.

“The entries were so fun and creative,” said Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano. “It made us very proud to present the mayors with such a great group of designs, and we appreciated their help in determining which entries rose to the top.”

The new stickers will be available at both the San Luis Obispo and Atascadero Elections Offices beginning October 7, and they will be at all polling locations throughout the county on Election Day, November 5.

There were two age divisions, grades 3-6 and grades 7-12. As it turned out, competition was stiff, and the Clerk-Recorder decided to award an additional honorable mention to Rudd Larson, a fifth grader at Georgia Brown Elementary School in Paso Robles, who happened to have submitted the very first entry in the inaugural contest. A smaller number of his sticker design will also be printed and available to voters as well.

Cuesta Scores Participation-Rate High

Programs at Cuesta College offering high school students the chance to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously were recently recognized for participation rates.

According to a UC Davis Wheelhouse Report, the College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) and Dual Enrollment programs at Cuesta College have the highest participation rate in California. These programs through CCAP include partnerships with 9 area school districts and fourteen high schools throughout San Luis Obispo County.

“Dual enrollment not only helps students earn college credits early but also supports better academic outcomes,” said Kristina Vastine, Cuesta College associate director of Instruction for Dual Enrollment/CCAP. “Studies show participants are more likely to finish high school, enroll in college, and achieve higher college GPAs.”

Taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment / CCAP program allows students to experience the rigors of college coursework while still within their supportive high school environment. “This allows them to explore college and career pathways and save time and money on their future certificates and degrees,” Vastine said.

Cuesta College’s offerings include automotive technology, agricultural mechanics, and the newly launched aviation mechanics program at Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande High Schools. Additionally, dual enrollment also boosts participation and often complements or replaces traditional Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Largest CHP Graduating Class in Years

On September 11, CHP cadets took part in the cadet run, their final physical task before becoming a CHP officer. Their 5-mile run began at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento and concluded at the California Peace Officers Memorial near the California State Capitol. This graduating class was the largest since June of 2022.

On September 13, those same 119 cadets were sworn in as officers during a graduation ceremony at the CHP Academy. The ceremony marked the completion of 26 weeks of training and the beginning of a new career serving the people of California. Preceding the badge presentation, the commissioners conducted a customary inspection of each cadet to ensure their readiness for the responsibilities as officers.
