One person died in an early morning house fire in Morro Bay, the fire chief reported.

Fire Chief Daniel McCrain said they received a report of a house fire at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, July 27 in the 500 block of Kings Avenue.

When they arrived the house was fully involved and photos of the scene sent to Estero Bay News by a reader who lives nearby show flames shooting out of the roof of the single-family home and a column of smoke rising hundreds of feet into the night sky, backlit by the fire.

Chief McCrain said in a news release sent out later that morning that they had confirmed one person died in the fire and were withholding his or her name until next of kin could be notified.

Morro Bay Fire was aided at the incident by several agencies — Cal-Fire/County Fire, SLO City Fire, CMC Fire, San Luis Ambulance, Morro Bay P.D., and the County Sheriff’s Department.

The San Luis Obispo Fire Investigation Strike Team or SLOFIST, a task force of fire investigators from every department in SLO County, is investigating the cause.
