A domestic disturbance in Nipomo led to the suspect barricading himself in his home for hours until Sheriff’s Deputies ended the standoff with no innocent people getting hurt.

According to a news release from Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla, deputies responded at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 to a disturbance call in the 100 block of South Avocado Ave., Nipomo.

Before they arrived, Cipolla said, the suspect allegedly vandalized a vehicle, breaking windows and damaging the body. He also reportedly threatened to kill the victim, whose name was not released. The suspect had fled the scene before deputies arrived.

Deputies soon located the suspect at his own Nipomo home in the 100 block of East Price St. What ensued was a tense standoff.

“The suspect was highly agitated,” Cipolla said, “and barricaded himself inside the residence. Several times during this incident, the suspect would come out of his house to challenge deputies to a fight before returning inside the home. He also threw rocks and bricks at Sheriff’s vehicles damaging them.”

The Special Enforcement Detail (SLO County’s SWAT team), responded to the scene and communications were established with the barricaded man.

“A Reverse 9-1-1 message was sent out to neighbors in the area to shelter in place,” Cipolla said. “The Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team established contact with the suspect and attempted for several hours to have the suspect end the standoff peacefully. But the suspect remained aggressive and non-compliant.”

Over 6 hours after it began, the Sheriff’s Department ended it.

“At approximately 6:15 a.m.,” Cipolla said, “the suspect again stepped out of his house and was immediately taken into custody by members of SED with the assistance of a Sheriff’s K9.”

Arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism and felony making criminal threats, was Bobby Heredia, 36 of Nipomo. He was booked into County Jail.
