SLO Man Hit, Killed Crossing Hwy 101

A San Luis Obispo man died and a Carpinteria woman suffered major injuries Aug. 24 when she hit a man crossing Hwy 101 on foot in Pismo Beach.

According to the Highway Patrol, at 10:12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 they received a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian on the southbound side of Hwy 101 just north of Five Cities Drive. 

According to an accident report, Mikeala Torres, 23 of Carpinteria was driving a 2011 Nissan Murano sport utility vehicle, southbound on Hwy 101 north of Five Cities Drive. Meanwhile, the San Luis Obispo man, 61, was walking east on Hwy 101 when he reportedly tried “to run across the southbound lanes of traffic into the center median.”

The man, whose identity hadn’t been released pending notification of next of kin, ran right into the path of Torres’ car and she could not avoid hitting and killing him.

The impact caused major damage to Torres’ car and she suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital. The pedestrian died at the scene. Weather conditions at the time, which was after nightfall, were “cool and calm.”

The CHP said the investigation was ongoing but the accident report.
