Exuberant in spirit and bright of mind up to the last day of his 97 3/4 years, avid Fiscalini walker Chuck Dowdle could be spotted happily ambling along the bluff trail most every afternoon, trekking poles in hand and a ready smile, always eager to share his “Author” business card and expound on his four published books, the most recent at age 95. Teacher, writer, bibliophile, philosopher, humorist, nature lover, athlete, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, man of devout faith, imaginative, inspiring, and all-around captivating human, Chuck moved on from a life well lived to a well-deserved eternal rest after he died peacefully at home in his favorite recliner on October 22, 2025.

Chuck was born to Frank and Grace (Van Raden) Dowdle in Crookston, Minnesota on February 1, 1928. His Midwest childhood was filled with boundless outdoor adventures and an impressive array of jobs — selling newspapers at the local hospital at age five, Minawkwa Country Club golf caddy at age 11, and industrious railroad “gandy dancer” at 16. A Navy veteran, Chuck married his former high school friend and classmate, Marilyn “Marty” Kirkwood, while attending college on the G.I. bill. Chuck graduated from St. John’s University at Collegeville, Minnesota in 1952, after which he accepted a teaching position at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. He and Marty loaded up the Ford Country Sedan with their few belongings and two toddlers and headed west in Old Red Bessie for an exciting new chapter in their lives.

Five daughters, an M.A. in Secondary Education, and 36 years later, Chuck retired from teaching English in Santa Rosa, CA. After losing his beloved wife to cancer after nearly five decades of marriage, Chuck became a “twice blessed man” when he made a spontaneous west coast road trip stop in Cambria to visit Marty’s close friend from high school, Carmelle Johnson Matthes. She soon became Carmelle Dowdle, and they shared 22 years of travel escapades and wedded bliss until her death in 2023.

Chuck is survived by daughters Kathy Kelez-Johnson (Mark), Laure Tatman (Dennis), Allie LeCaux, Genevieve Kirkwood, and Mary Kavanaugh (Tom), stepson Bill Matthes (Lisa) and stepdaughter Cathy Millard (Dan), nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by wives Marty and Carmelle, newborn twin sons, Michael and Mark, four siblings, Bill, Cathy, Betty and Jerry, and every member of his Cathedral High School graduating class.

A graveside service will be held at Sanger Cemetery in the spring.

With Thanksgiving soon to be, happy-belly cheers to Chuck’s favorite meal — turkey drumsticks, mashed potatoes and gravy, savory stuffing, cranberry sauce, and a slab of home-baked pumpkin pie with a generous dollop of whipped cream. To all who knew him (or not), be sure to go for a second helping this November 27 in Chuck’s honor!
