The Morro Bay High School Athletic Boosters Club has named its Athletes of the Month for April 2025, and two track stars and a golfer have been teed up to be honored.
“The student/athlete recognition,” Boosters President Ken Hotaling said, “is a monthly request of all coaches to highlight some of the amazing student/athletes that are contributing to their teams. This month, the MBHS Athletic Boosters would like to congratulate golfer Stone Hawk, and track and field stars Liam Burton and Shelby Taylor.”
Golf

Boys’ Golf Team Coach, Sean Allstot, has nothing but praise for Hawk, who’s been playing like a shark.
“Through two weeks of league competition,” Coach Allstot said, “Stone leads the league in overall scoring average, posting rounds of 77 and 83. He won the first tournament of the year with a field of 30 golfers, posting the best round of the season thus far.”
Track

In track, Coach Jennifer Frere nominated a girl runner, and a boy jumper.
Coach Frere said of sophomore phenom Shelby Taylor, “Shelby Taylor is a distance athlete who competes in events from the 800 meters to the 3200m.”
Taylor was also a Fifth Place Medalist at the State Cross Country Meet last year, breaking her coach’s school record for the State Meet in doing so. And now she’s apparently done it again.
Taylor recently broke Coach Frere’s 3200m school record (11-minutes 9-seconds) that stood for 35 years. The new school record now stands at 11:00.3.
“Shelby is a dedicated athlete,” Coach Frere said, “who puts the work in everyday. She is also a supportive teammate, positive, has a fun sense of humor and is welcoming to newcomers. Shelby continues to improve on her times and racing strategies. As we start our championship season, Shelby is prepared to excel and see how far she can go in the postseason.”
Pole Vault

Pole vaulter Liam Burton is leading the way for the Pirates in the field events.
Burton recently won the Silver Pole Vault competition at the West Coast Relays at Buchanan High School with a Personal Record of 13-feet 3-inches.
Pole Vault Coach, Macy Rivas said, “Liam is an athlete who shows up and will do what he can with what he has. He’s strong-minded and highly capable as an athlete on and off the track. He’s extremely adaptable and will rise to the task when the opportunity arises.
He’s also a fun guy to be around. “He’s quick witted and always keeps you on your toes,” Coach Rivas said, “that being said, he can also be a social butterfly and an extremely supportive teammate/competitor. He’s come a long way in a short period of time; he should be proud of his accomplishments!”
