Morro Bay quarterback Sands Dougherty, shown here from the CIF Central Section Div. V Championship game, was the MVP of the Ocean League and the top passer in the State with over 4,440 yards.
Morro Bay High has put the wrap on its Fall 2024 sports season and the Pirates teams can take a bow after winning a couple of championships and league MVP Awards as well.
Football
On first glance, Morro Bay would seem to have had a so-so season finishing 7-7, but that would be a lie by omission, as the Pirates, who finished fourth in the Ocean League made it all the way to the CIF Central Section Div. V Championship game, coming up short 32-28 against Selma in the Div. V title game, played before a friendly hometown crowd.
On an individual basis, Pirate’s quarterback, junior, Sands Dougherty was named Ocean League MVP after he had one of the best statistical seasons of any quarterback in the State.
Indeed, Dougherty finished atop the State with 4,441 passing yards, finishing over 100 yards ahead of the second best QB, Thomas Donovan of El Cajon (4,134 yds).
Nipomo High School won the Ocean League Championship and its coach Stephen Field was Coach of the Year.
Defensive Player of the Year went to Nipomo Sophomore, Troy Simonson and the All Purpose Player of the Year went to Jaron Sampson of Templeton High School.
Morro Bay’s No. 1 receiver, senior John Myers, the fellow most often on the receiving end of Dougherty’s passes, was named First Team All-League. He was also the fifth leading receiver in the state with 1,543 yards.
Defensively, senior linebacker Colton Janovich, and junior, defensive back, Efrain Hernandez were also named First Team.
Morro Bay fared better with the Second Team All-League picks taking a total of seven spots.
Offensively, senior linemen, Dustin Davis and Rowen McCain were named Second Team All League, along with wide receivers James Nickel, and Ryder Busch, both seniors. Sophomore running back, Jayden Johnson, also made Second Team All League.
Defensively, defensive lineman Andrew Llamas, a senior, was named to the Second Team All League.

Also on the First Team for Morro Bay were setter Reese Kelly and middle hitter Lucy Dupree. Both are juniors.
On Second Team All League are outside hitter Joslyn Finch, a junior; Jessica Coloma a junior defensive specialist (DS); and junior setter, Keo Cross.

In Ocean League Girls Golf play it was Templeton’s Ashlyn Burgett who was named MVP, but Morro Bay’s Lucy Fortini scored high enough to be named First Team All League and was Morro Bay’s only girl golfer to be honored this year.

Cross Country
Morro Bay High’s Girls Cross Country Team was led by Shelby Taylor, a sophomore who was named MVP of the Mountain League after winning the league meet race at Cuesta College’s Fairbanks Course. Taylor also finished second at CIF and was fifth at the State Meet.
In Cross Country the race winner gets the MVP and the Top-8 are First Team All League. Of note, San Luis Obispo had four of the Top-9 spots and likely won the team scoring (which was not reported by the CCAA).
Morro Bay’s other top runners — sophomore, Wendy Wilson and junior Phaedra Fernflores were named Second Team All League (the next eight finishers).
On the Boys’ side, senior Eli Waldman finished with the eighth spot and made First Team All League. Another sophomore, Abe Gade was 10th and was named Second Team All League.
