With the new school year is in full swing, fall sports teams are busy competing, and the Morro Bay High Athletic Booster’s Club is again honoring student athletes with the “Athlete of the Month” designations, as nominated by the coaches of the various sports teams.
The goal, according to the Booster’s Ken Hotaling, is to highlight some of the athletes playing sports that don’t normally get a lot of recognition in the media.
The September 2024 “Athletes of the Month” are: Astrid Barnett-Davis, James Bautista, Jessica Coloma, and Otis Yevdayev.
Cross Country
Cross Country Coach Jennifer Frere named girl’s runner, Barnett-Davis and the boy’s, Bautista as her September honorees.
“Astrid is a junior,” Coach Frere said, “and has run cross country for three years. She is a leader and a captain for our girls’ team. She is a positive role model for younger athletes, gets the most out of every practice and will be a key competitor for us this season.”
Bautista, “is a freshman who started running with us during our summer program. He continues to get stronger and faster each week due to his commitment to practice. James pushes himself during workouts and has the competitive grit that is essential for cross country success.”
Girls Volleyball
Volleyball Coach Shelby Frey picked out some of her athletes from the girls’ volleyball and boys’ beach volleyball teams.
Girls’ volleyball player, Coloma “has been bringing the energy in practice and games!” Coach Frey said. “She had a 5-point serving run in our game against Soledad on Sept. 17 helping us to a win in set four.
“Her energy and positivity on the court is just what our girls’ program has needed. It is well received by her teammates and will hopefully be leading us to more wins in the rest of our season.”
Yevdayev, “has been the heart of our boys beach team!” Coach Frey said. “He is outgoing and outstanding, and always the first one to practice and volunteer. He shows up every day with a great attitude and is ready to work hard, and he’s only a freshman! Otis is going to be one to look out for when it comes to our indoor season.”
Estero Bay News joins the Booster’s Club in congratulating the Athletes of the Month for September.
