Have you noticed within the last 10 years consumer electronics continue to get thinner and are made of less metal and more plastic? How about the fact that we can barely get our electronics to last longer than their manufacturers warranty? Coincidence? I think not.
Tech titans such as Apple, Samsung, LG, and MANY others in the last decade or two have realized there is much more money in sales than there is in service. This realization caused said companies to not only make a less serviceable product, but to also take away from the build quality and quality of materials used to ensure imminent failure.
Prior to the 90s, we repaired everything! And these things were built to last. Not that long ago, there were repair shops for vacuums, consumer electronics, televisions, radios and many more devices. Repairs have become a lot less profitable due to our throw-away society constructed around the decline in quality of materials and quickly obsolete parts. Not only electronics are suffering from this issue, but also household appliances, motor vehicles, farm equipment and many other consumer products.
The only way to fight this trend, in our opinion, is to buy into products that respect our wallets and care about longevity and serviceability. Not putting our trust in manufacturers that want to make a quick buck and would love to continue to force us to upgrade every year.
