The Morro Bay National Estuary Program will host a series of free field trips throughout July and August, providing families and community members with opportunities to explore local ecosystems through hands-on outdoor learning experiences.

This summer series is part of the Estuary Program’s ongoing effort to provide environmental education opportunities that connect people with local waterways and habitats. Through partnerships with local educators and community organizations, the program aims to increase access to outdoor learning experiences and foster stewardship of the Morro Bay watershed.

“These trips will be a fun, engaging way to spend time with your family outdoors this summer and learn more about our special local ecosystems,” Forest Lurz, estuary program education coordinator said in a news release.

The field trips will take place at locations throughout the Morro Bay watershed and San Luis Obispo County. While the trips are designed with families and children in mind, participants of all ages are welcome. Field trips scheduled for July include a nature walk in the Elfin Forest, kayaking on the Morro Bay estuary, a tidepool exploration program, an ecological restoration activity at Prefumo Creek, and a sunset bat walk. Additional trips will be offered throughout August.

All field trips are free to attend, although registration is required and space is limited. A full schedule of events and registration information can be found at mbnep.eventbrite.com.
