As a reminder artists are wanted for the SLO City Fall Box Art Program. The City is accepting submissions through Monday, September 23 at 5 p.m. PST to turn utility boxes into eye-catching canvases. The City is on the lookout for bold, fresh designs that will add creativity and visual appeal to the streets.
The selected artists will receive an $1,000 stipend for their box art renderings. Like the summer round, this round’s selected designs will be vinyl wrapped on to the utility boxes. Whether your medium is photography, sculpture, fabric arts, mixed media collage, or digital design, we want to see your creative vision brought to life.
With 74 utility boxes already adorned with original artwork by local artists, residents, students, and community members, the program continues to grow in popularity. This round, about 10 utility boxes will be refreshed with new art—10 boxes were revamped this summer, and the remaining 10 are slated for a makeover in November.

presented by Nathan Pieplow, author of the “Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds.”
All around us, the birds are constantly telling us who they are and what they are doing. In this talk, Pieplow unlocks the secrets of their language. You’ll listen in on the pillow talk of a pair of red-winged blackbirds and learn the secret signals that cliff swallows use when they have found food. You’ll learn how one bird sound can have many meanings, and how one meaning can have many sounds and as well as how, sometimes, the meaning isn’t in the sounds at all.
All MCAS Zoom Community Programs are free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. No signup/registration required to attend. Readers can find the link on the event calendar at https://www.morrocoastaudubon.org.

One of the most urgent social and economic needs of California is a bigger supply of housing that is affordable to households with low to moderate incomes. The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents the show The Outsiders from the Other Side, a cross-border art exhibition showcasing the rich artistic landscape of Tijuana. The collection by nine extraordinary artists is on display through Oct. 11.
The Outsiders from the Other Side explores the intricate relationship between the United States and Tijuana – a culturally linked connection yet divided by the border. Through their diverse and impactful collection, the nine artists featured in this exhibition invite us to consider the border not just as a physical barrier, but as a symbolic gateway into another dimension. Crossing the border, or ‘going to the other side,’ we enter a space where cultural experiences and identities are deeply connected and strikingly distinct.
The collection delves into the complex and multifaceted artistic landscape shaped by the artists’ unique cross-border experiences. By presenting a nuanced reflection on their dual heritage, the exhibition sheds light on the artists’ ability to challenge and redefine traditional concepts of national identity.
Featured artists include: Acamonchi, Alejandro Zacarias, Basura Innecesaria, Damariz Aispuro, Dada, Hermanos De La Torre, Mariel Miranda, Ris Byron and Toni Larios.
The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 at the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo campus. Admission to the gallery is free. For hours and more go to cuesta.edu or call (805) 546-3202.
