The League of Women Voters of SLO County will host the Zoom Lunch with the League meeting “Who Can Afford to Live in SLO County? Economic & Social Impacts of a Diverse Housing Supply” on Monday September 30 at noon. Free but registration is required at https://bit.ly/4gy4qK4
The moderator is Michael Foote, director of economic development and community affairs with REACH Central Coast
Panelists include:
• Scott Collins, Executive Director, HASLO
• Damien Mavis, Co-founder & Principal, Covelop Inc.
• Ken Trigueiro, CEO & President, People’s Self-Help Housing
Housing affordability and economic vitality are strongly linked. Too many families in our county have become “cost burdened” and forced into tough decisions of where to work and live. This has destabilized business growth, added restraints to employee recruitment, as well as productivity and retention. We’re now seeing local tax revenue, resources for education, healthcare, and public safety all suffer. Housing is being built throughout SLO County, but are we building the right type to support our economic strength? Hear how local affordable housing experts are overcoming challenges with innovation and vision for future sustainable solutions.

San Luis Obispo County is home to more than 1,500 nonprofit organizations––all of which must be governed by a nonprofit board of directors. In an effort to educate interested community members on the importance of board service and what it entails, Spokes, an organization providing resources to support and empower the nonprofit community, will offer Board Service 101 on October 7.
The free online class is live online from noon to 12:45 p.m. Advance registration is required.
“One of the most significant challenges our local nonprofits face is securing qualified and competent board directors, creating a huge disadvantage to our community,” said Michael Simkins, chief executive officer of Spokes. “Our hope with this class is to give attendees an accurate portrayal of what’s involved in board service and how impactful and rewarding this type of community service can be.”
Taught by Simkins, Board Service 101 will cover: the responsibilities and three “duties” of a board director; the expected time and financial commitment; and how to find the right board. Additionally, it will detail the many benefits of board service, from personal development of leadership skills and network expansion, to being a change agent and enhancing the quality of life in your community.
Board Service 101 will serve as a brief precursor to more in-depth board service programming Spokes will offer in the coming months.

The 10th anniversary of the feature film rom-com/mockumentary “Authors Anonymous” will be celebrated with a special screening at the Bay Theater in Morro Bay on Monday, September 30.
The event is co-sponsored by theater owner Cameron Wilson and the Central Coast Writers’ Conference, scheduled for Saturday, October 5 at Cuesta College.
Local KVEC radio host and writer David Congalton, who wrote the original screenplay, will introduce the movie and participate in an audience Q&A afterwards. He will be joined by Dana and Dr. Scott Robertson of Arroyo Grande, who helped produce the movie.
The film stars Kaley Cuoco, Chris Klein, Jonathan Banks, Teri Polo, Dylan Walsh, Tricia Helfer, Jonathan Bennett, and the late Dennis Farina in one of his final roles.
“Authors Anonymous” is about a small writing critique group of unpublished writers who meet weekly to share their work and support one another in their dreams of publication.
That collegial, all-for-one atmosphere is soon tested when Cuoco’s character quickly scores an agent, a book deal, and a movie deal, leaving the others to stew in jealousy and envy.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on September 30 at the Bay Theater, 464 Morro Bay Blvd., in Morro Bay. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.
