Morro Bay lost one of its beloved local characters with the death of George “Boomer” Kolaczyk.

Boomer was bon in 1952 in Alhambra, Calif., and moved to Morro Bay at the tender age of 8. Boomer was a Navy veteran and was a popular figure among Morro Bay’s sports enthusiasts, both youth and adult.

He was the City’s chief official for many years, calling balls and strikes on the softball diamond, and whistling fouls on the court.
He was a long time City employee in the recreation department and the head groundskeeper for the Lila Keiser Park ball fields before retiring in 2011.

Boomer had many friends and was a loving father and grandfather.

A celebration of Boomer’s life is slated for noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24 at the Morro Bay Vet’s Hall. All are welcome.
